Asking the following questions before hiring your DJ will help you get the best DJ for your special event.
How long have you been in business?
Experience is important, but it doesnt always tell the whole story. Ask your prospective DJ the following questions regarding their history in the entertainment business.
How did your career as a DJ begin? In a nightclub?
Do you work for yourself, or are you employed by another DJ company?
How many events have you performed? What type of events (weddings,
corporate parties, pool parties, bar/bah mitzvahs, etc)?
Be sure that you have the right DJ for your event. For example, an
interactive DJ provides fun and excitement to your guests through games and dance lessons.
Do you have liability insurance?
Nowadays, liability coverage is becoming increasingly important. Insurance is mutually beneficial for you and your DJ. For example, a guest accidentally trips breaking the sound system, or the DJ accidentally breaks something, both parties are covered and no one has to sue for damages. Hotels are beginning to require that every DJ provide proof of liability insurance. Make sure that your prospective DJ is covered. Below is a copy of one local hotels policy regarding liability coverage.
POLICY
Liability Insurance Requirements
1. All entities contracted by the property or performing destination services must retain liability insurance of at least 1 million dollars in value. In some cases dependent upon the complexity of the event or service the vendor may be asked to increase that amount in proportion with the risk associated.
2. Certificates must be provided and copied to the Director of Finance at least four weeks prior to an event or commencement of services. Traditionally bonded crafts such as electrical, carpentry, event setup must provide appropriate blond certificate and license.
3. The certificate of insurance provided must list the hotels name as an additional insurer.

What type of equipment do you use?
Home stereos systems are great, but they are not up to professional standards by any means. A serious DJ should operate professional equipment. If DJs dont possess photos of their equipment, ask to see their gear in person. DJs should have the ability to make a distinction between professional and consumer equipment.
May I preview a DJ in advance?
Watching a DJs performance can be a valuable experience. You can watch how a DJ actually performs in an event, live or on videotape, as long as it shows the DJs gear and him/her mingling with the crowd. Please keep in mind that a videotape is just as effective as seeing the real deal. Many DJs have reservations about inviting people to watch their performance because they fear that it may upset the party planners if strangers interfere with their party. How would you feel if unwelcome guests showed up to view the DJ and helped themselves to food and a few drinks?
May I see a selection of your music? Do you take requests?
Some DJs use music lists while others do not. You need to make sure that the DJ has a diverse collection which can appeal to large guests at various events, especially weddings. The DJs collection should also be large enough to handle requests.
What are your hourly overtime rates? What is your cancellation policy?
Questions about overtime rates and cancellation policies should be covered in a written contract. A written contract is essential to hiring a DJ because it protects you and the DJ. Even if your DJ is a friend or family member, you still need a written contract. Anything can happen and if something goes wrong without a written contract it could be a huge disaster. Read your contract carefully. Watch out for fine prints and hidden costs. If anything sounds confusing, ask the DJ to clarify it. Always make sure the DJ signs the contract or at least make sure their name is on the contract.
